Salesforce Debug Log Setup and Information

If you’re working in Salesforce development or administration, debug logs are one of the most important tools for troubleshooting issues, analyzing automation, and understanding system behavior. Whether you are debugging Apex code, Flow errors, validation rules, or integrations, Salesforce Debug Logs help you identify exactly what is happening behind the scenes.

In this blog post, we’ll explore:

What Salesforce Debug Logs are

  • Why they are important
  • How to set them up
  • Key log components
  • Best practices for using debug logs effectively

What is a Salesforce Debug Log?

A Salesforce Debug Log records detailed system events and execution information when a user or process runs in Salesforce.

These logs help developers and admins:

  • Troubleshoot Apex code
  • Analyze Flow execution
  • Debug validation rule issues
  • Investigate integration failures
  • Monitor automation performance
Think of debug logs as a “behind-the-scenes recording” of everything Salesforce executes during a transaction.

Why are Debug Logs Important?

Debug logs provide visibility into:

  • Apex execution steps
  • SOQL queries
  • DML operations
  • Workflow and Flow execution
  • Callouts
  • CPU usage and governor limits
  • Exceptions and errors

Without debug logs, identifying the root cause of an issue can become extremely difficult.

How to Set Up Debug Logs in Salesforce

Salesforce allows you to capture logs for specific users or automated processes.

Step 1: Navigate to Debug Logs

  1. Go to Setup
  2. Search for Debug Logs in the Quick Find box

Step 2: Add a New Trace Flag

A Trace Flag tells Salesforce whose activity should be logged.

  1. Click New
  2. Select:
    • Traced Entity Type → User
    • Traced Entity Name → Select your user
  3. Choose a Debug Level
  4. Set Start Date and Expiration Date
  5. Click Save

How to Generate a Debug Log

Once trace flags are active:

  1. Perform the action you want to debug
    • Save a record
    • Execute Apex
    • Run a Flow
    • Trigger an integration
  2. Return to the Debug Logs page
  3. Open the generated log file

Salesforce automatically creates logs during the transaction.

Salesforce Debug Logs are an essential troubleshooting and learning tool for every Salesforce Developer and Administrator. By understanding how to configure trace flags, interpret log entries, and monitor governor limits, you can quickly identify issues and improve application performance.

Mastering debug logs will significantly improve your debugging skills and help you build more efficient Salesforce solutions.
